REIKI: THE HEALING TOUCH

Reiki, or touch therapy, is a form of energy healing

The word reiki originated from the Japanese vocabulary. While ‘Rei’ means ‘universal life’, ‘ki’ implies ‘energy’. So, Reiki literally means ‘universal life energy.’ According to the proponents of this energy healing technique, Reiki is the universal life energy that flows through all living beings. This mind-body-technique is also known as ‘hands-on healing art.’
When the energy of reiki is activated, it addresses the body, mind and spirit. This technique develops your own ability to heal yourself and others.

Origin of Reiki

Reiki has its inception in ancient science. The earliest reference to this healing science was found in 2500-year-old Sanskrit sutra. It is said that Reiki was re-discovered in the 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui. He taught several reiki masters so that the system of chakra healing should not be forgotten. This healing technique was further expanded by one his disciples, Dr Chujiro Hayashi, who set up a Reiki clinic in Tokyo. Dr. Hayashi is also credited with the refinement of reiki. He taught several reiki masters and one of his famous students was Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman. She introduced this healing technique in the US and contributed majorly to the development of Reiki in the American subcontinent while her disciples further popularised it in the West. Currently, William Le Rand is one of the most well-reckoned reiki masters.

What is Reiki?

As already mentioned, Reiki is a Japanese mind-body- technique in which a healer places his hands on you or just above you to promote healing. The theory behind this process is somewhat like this: The healer acts at the medium between you and universal energy. This energy, it is believed, passes on to you through the healer and stimulates your body’s natural healing abilities. Reiki is not known to cure any disease or ailment directly. Rather, it improves your overall well-being with the help of energy fields.

Levels of Reiki Learning

Dr Mikao Usui divided the regime of Reiki into three degrees or levels of learning. People from any faith or religion can be trained in this healing system.

Level 1: This level teaches you to heal yourself for self-healing
Level 2: At this level, you learn to heal others as well. It also teaches you the technique of healing someone from a distance.
Level 3: This degree of Reiki learning teaches you to become a master, enhancing your previously-gained skill sets.

5 Tenets of Reiki

Dr. Usui created five basic principles of Reiki. Following these principles every day will help you lead a happier, healthier and fuller life.

  • Just for today, I will let go of anger
  • Just for today, I will let go of worry
  • Just for today, I will give thanks for my blessing
  • Just for today, I will do my work honestly
  • Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living being.
