IS DEPRESSION KEEPING YOU SEDENTARY? HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO

Recent reports suggest there is a massive increase in depression and other mental health issues in people during the COVID-19 pandemic. In such a scenario, you might find it difficult to get up from your bed and have an energizing start to your day. Let us understand why this happens and how we can tackle it:

COVID-19 has affected both our mental and physical health substantially. A recent study conducted by researchers at San Raffaele Hospital in Italy found that a large number of COVID-19 patients were also affected by psychological challenges like PTSD, depression, anxiety among other illnesses.

These mental health issues are not limited to people affected by the pandemic. With the stress of the pandemic ever-present around them, there has been a significant uptick in the reported mental health issues all across the world. A recent survey conducted by GOQii, a California based smart tech enables preventive healthcare problem found that almost 43 per cent of Indians are living with depression. In addition to this people are also suffering from panic, loneliness due to social distancing and financial distress and a general sense of uncertainty which is the main cause behind the mental health conditions of a majority of people.

What Is Depression?

The definition of depression as per clinical psychology is a mood disorder that is characterized by sadness or loss of interest in otherwise favorite things. Such feelings occur in people from time to time and are classified as a mental health condition if the manifestations last for more than two weeks. Depression in its severe form can impede many of your physiological functions like your motor skills which leads to a condition called psychomotor retardation.

Why Does Getting Out Of Bed Become So Difficult?

If depression reaches a state of psychomotor retardation, then the connection between your psychological and muscular functions slow down and makes it difficult for you to carry out to regular activities. It comes very difficult to move and sometimes results in a near-paralysis like situation for the individual. This state of mind also has a negative effect on the way you talk, the tasks you carry out like brushing, wearing your clothes, taking a shower and many other activities.

3 Things To Do To Get Out Of Bed

If your depression is at a severe state where you seem confined to your bed, the first thing to do would be to reach out and get some professional help. A psychiatrist will be able to diagnose your condition and prescribe antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs along with other therapies. With therapies and medication, you can make a small effort to move around your room which will help ease your movement in the long run.

Start your day slow

Don't try to do too much in one go, your first goal should be to try and sit up. Use the pillows and cushions around you to assist you. This simple act of lifting yourself from your bed will be the perfect way to kick-start your day.

Enjoy the morning rays, quietly

Once you are sitting on your bed, don't rush to move out of your bed. Take some time to enjoy your surroundings and if possible soak yourself in the rays of the morning sun. You can then think of happy thoughts and memories as the day progresses to keep your mental health steady. You could also adopt a few meditation techniques to help soothe your nerves.

Focus on your surroundings

Once you spend enough time acclimatising yourself every morning you can then shift your focus to your favourite belongings that are present around you. Grab these items and try to focus on your feelings. If you have a pet, spending a few minutes with them can be a motivating experience. Experiencing the unconditional love of your pets acts as a perfect start to your day as both your mind and nerves are relaxed and it allows for smoother muscle movements.
