YOGA FOR BEGINNERS: DOING THE HEALTHY TWIST!

If you're new to yoga, you may feel a little intimidated by the whole process. After all, it requires you to move your body and breathe in a manner you’re not accustomed to, while you try to find your inner calm. And even though your trainer may be calm and patient while they teach you the poses, getting those right may feel like a herculean task at first. But no worries! At YO1, we ensure that you have fun while doing yoga to get in shape.

So, here’s how you can get started on your yoga journey:

Practice before perfection!

As you are aware, Yoga sessions involve participants doing odd poses (or asanas) to make the body feel physically active. But what you need to realize is that it's okay if you can't get into them right away. We all have to start somewhere, and it's all about the progress we make, not perfection. There is nothing to feel silly or embarrassed about, because it is all about embracing your inner self!

Get your basics right

Yoga is all about connecting your body, mind, and breath. At YO1, we have a team of certified Yoga instructors who guide you in a safe environment to help you deepen your understanding of Yoga physically, mentally, and spiritually. The sessions — viz. Group Yoga, Meditation, Restorative Yoga, Therapeutic and alignment-based yoga, Pranayama, Kriyas, and Yoga Nidra, help you focus on your breath and moving slowly and deliberately.

Keep calm and breathe

One of the main benefits of yoga is it helps you open up your lungs through a series of breathing exercises. This not only helps you be more aware of your breathing mechanism, but also rids your body of excess phlegm and mucous, while improving the blood flow to your brain and overall improving your lungs’ elasticity. At YO1, we engage participants in a series of breathing exercises like the Kapalbhati, Sutra Neti, Surya Bhedana, to name a few.

Strike the right pose

At YO1, yoga therapy sessions include both physical and mental asanas, meaning you get to rejuvenate both mind and your body. Asanas like Vinyasa Yoga and Suryanamaskar aim to strengthen your physicality while improving your cardiovascular and respiratory health, among other benefits. The asanas are designed to boost your overall fitness and energy levels.

Restore your balance

Yoga sessions at YO1 are all about relaxing and connecting with self! For instance, through Restorative Yoga, you can find it easy to slow down and open your body through passive stretching by using supporting props to help the body in terms of exercises that align with gravity. It requires you to stay in the postures for a longer time, so that you can have more time to comfortably adapt to the pose, while relaxing the whole time.

At YO1, we believe that yoga is about more than just a physical practice but is also about mindfulness and self-care. Hence, our yoga therapy sessions help sync your mind and body in harmony. So, take your time to meditate or do some deep breathing exercises. In the end, it’s about taking one step at a time. Also, listening to your body when it wants to take a break– sometimes just lying in savasana (aka "corpse pose") can be the most rejuvenating part of your practice.

In conclusion

Yoga can be a fun way to get in shape while connecting with yourself. YO1 yoga therapy encourages mindfulness and relaxation through both mediation and exercises. And most importantly, remember that yoga is all about relaxing your mind and body.
